Project Overview

The project involves redesigning the Maple telehealth app to improve user experience and accessibility, focusing on mental health services. The redesign aims to simplify the process of scheduling online therapy sessions and make the interface more welcoming and less clinical to better serve individuals seeking mental health support.

Research and Plan

  • Propose the project and develop a detailed timeline.

  • Conduct initial research on existing telehealth apps and gather data on user needs, particularly focusing on mental health services

Pre-Production

  • Create initial sketches and wireframes focusing on improving the usability and accessibility of the app.

  • Develop storyboards to visualize the new user journey within the app.

Production

  • Develop low-fidelity in Figma

  • Develop the high-fidelity user interface assets in Figma.

Finalize

  • Build a clickable prototype and begin informal user testing with peers and potential users to gather early feedback.

Key Suggestions from Survey Feedback for UX/UI Design Improvement

Streamlined Appointment Booking

Make booking quick and easy. Users should easily see available therapists and time slots, with color coding to show real-time availability.

Clear Pricing Transparency

Display pricing information upfront and highlight affordable plans throughout the app to help reduce concerns about costs.

Humanize the Interaction

Add therapist bios, user reviews, and possibly video greetings to help users feel more comfortable and build trust.

Accessibility and Navigation Improvements

Make key actions easy to find with clear icons and large buttons. Simplify the app’s navigation to make it easier to use.

Analysis of User Personas

Ease of Use: All users value simplicity and quick navigation. Emily and Sarah prioritize a clean design with clear steps while Mark seeks efficiency and speed.

Flexibility in Communication: Users want the ability to choose communication modes (text, video, phone). This is particularly important for Mark, who prefers quick messaging, while Sarah wants flexibility based on her comfort level.

Personalization: Sarah and Emily both desire personalized experiences, such as mood tracking and session reminders, while Mark wants more customization options for communication and notifications.

Privacy and Security: Privacy is a top concern for all three users. Sarah is particularly sensitive about her data, while Mark expects robust security measures.

Therapist Search and Booking: Mark and Sarah emphasize the need for a quick and efficient therapist booking process. Emily wants the process to be intuitive, with a visually appealing design.

Outcome

Working on this project has helped me understand the entire process more deeply. User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design work together to shape the overall design of the app.

Research is essential for understanding both the existing brand and the users. It helps improve the user experience and impacts the UI design. My background as an art therapist has been valuable in this stage, as I can better understand user needs and am open to receiving feedback without bias. I’ve really enjoyed the research process.

The UI design is built from user research, guiding designers to create solutions that meet user needs in the real project. The steps of wireframing, low-fidelity design, style tiles, and high-fidelity design each contribute to improving the design at every stage. Tools like Figma are incredibly useful for creating clickable prototypes, helping designers understand the design better and making it easier to improve. It’s also great for user testing and design reviews. Honestly, I just realized that my perfectionist tendencies have turned out to be a huge asset in the UI process—something I once thought was a flaw!

Overall, I really enjoy doing UX/UI design because I can see how I can use my inner potential to improve the app, especially in the technology aspect. I'm looking forward to continuing this journey.
